"Celebrating History,

The Taos Art Association at 70"

Exhibition Dates: September 17, 2022 - January 2, 2023

Opening Reception:  3pm - 5pm, September 17,  2022

In collaboration with the Taos Center of the Arts (TCA), 203 Fine Art is pleased to present a visual recollection and brief history of the Taos Art Association. It has been seventy years since the formation of the originating organization, The Taos Artists Association, which would later become the Taos Center for the Arts. The TAA was formed in 1952 by a group of 28 artists, most of whom would be considered avant-garde at that time when most of the galleries and commercial venues were selling landscapes and paintings of southwestern themes by the older, more established Taos Society Artists. The group’s mission was to create a venue where forward-thinking artists could show the art that they wanted to create, going beyond what the commercial galleries expected them to create.

Recognizing that the TAA has naturally connected to many other groups and organizations over time, the opening reception will include talks by Davison Koenig, Executive Director of the Couse Foundation, and Juniper Leherissey, Executive Director of the Harwood Museum, who will share their perspective on the evolution of the TAA and how it influenced and informed modern art in the region, becoming an essential part of the of art history in Taos and the region.

This exhibition will be on view from September 17, 2022, through January 2, 2023.

For 25 years, the two lives of John De Puy and Isabel Ferreira-De Puy have been intertwined in a creative, romantic relationship portrayed throughout this collection. While they share the desert Southwest as the inspiration behind their vivid colors and form, they continue to express their individual spirits, from mythical to mystical.

Despite the generational difference separating these two artists, the individual stories shared in their respective works create a larger conversation when paired together, as these oil works on canvas and paper depict juxtaposed views of a shared subject. With some rare, never-exhibited pieces by John and newer creations by Isabel, this collection reveals what it means to be a part of the desert.
