Biography

Leo Garel was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1917. As a child he showed a great interest in drawing, and went on to study at the Parsons School of Design, the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, and the Arts Students League of New York.

 

From 1945-1952 Garel lived in Taos, showing work at the Blue Door Gallery and Galeria Escondida. His work there drew the attention of both heiress Mabel Dodge Luhan and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz. Garel moved back east in 1953, first to Woodstock, New York and then to Stockbridge in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts, where he lived out the rest of his days painting and developing the field of art psychotherapy.
