Ann Saint John Hawley Biography

Ann Saint John Hawley was born in Panama in 1919 and raised in the Philippines, Washington, D.C. and Lake Bluff, Illinois. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Theater Arts from Northwestern University and a Master of Arts in Painting from the University of Denver. She and her husband moved from Denver, Colorado to the thriving art colony of Taos, New Mexico, in 1975.

A dedicated artist, potter, sculptor, and practitioner of Butoh, Hawley was also a mother of six. Her works include oil paintings, watercolor, pen and ink drawings, sumi drawing, woodcarvings, woodcuts, serigraphs, monoprints, etchings and sculpture. Inspired by her feeling that spirit is in all forms, her work manifests itself in the dynamic flow of integration and disintegration.

A prolific and active artist throughout her life, she continued to paint and sculpt until her passing in 2011 at the age of ninety-two.
