  • Staff Report

This Saturday, Nov. 29, from 4-6 p.m., 203 Fine Art will present vibrant and expressive paintings and collages by abstract artist Beatrice Mandelman from the 1970s, including her celebrated Sun Series.

The artist, who died in 1998, was a celebrated member of the Taos Moderns.

Mandelman, an American abstract artist, was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Jewish immigrants who imbued their children with their social justice values and love of the arts.

After studying art in New York City and working for the Works Progress Administration Federal Arts Project (WPA-FAP), Mandelman arrived in Taos in 1944 at the age of 32 with her artist husband, Louis Leon Ribak.

Intertwined in shape and color, these layered pieces are reflective of a land and a life that became distilled into art history.
