Abstract woodworking inspired by Taos
June 17, 2024

The Taos art scene is set to experience an exhilarating new dimension with the opening of "Close to Home: Landscape Portraits," an exhibition at 203 Fine Art showcasing the latest works of master woodworker Dean Pulver. Known for his extraordinary craftsmanship and innovative approach to woodworking, Pulver's new series marks a significant departure from his previous functional creations. The exhibition opens on June 29, 2024, and will run until July 27, 2024, with an opening reception from 5 to 8 PM on the first day.

Dean Pulver, who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Philadelphia College of Art, has long been celebrated for his ability to merge artistry with functionality. However, in "Close to Home," Pulver ventures into the abstract, capturing the essence of the landscapes that surround him in Taos, New Mexico.

Pulver's process begins with topographic maps and an electric motorcycle — tools that allow him to explore and document the contours of the mountains, valleys and rivers that characterize the Taos region. These excursions are not merely for observation; they are a method of immersion, a way for Pulver to absorb the energy and nuances of the landscape. The resulting works are not literal representations but rather abstract portraits that convey the spirit and personality of the land.

Growing up in a multicultural family of artists in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pulver was influenced by his German and Irish father, a commercial illustrator, art director and painter, and his Japanese mother, a clothing designer and fiber artist. This rich artistic background laid the foundation for his creative pursuits, fostering a deep appreciation for both the aesthetic and functional aspects of art.

Pulver's new works exemplify his capacity to innovate and transcend the traditional boundaries of his craft. Known for his exhibits and collections at prestigious institutions such as the Harwood Museum of Art, Fuller Craft Museum, Bellevue Art Museum, and The Center for Art in Wood, Pulver has consistently demonstrated his prowess as a woodworker. His teaching stints at renowned institutions like Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Penland School of Crafts, and the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship have further solidified his reputation in the art community. In 2017, he was awarded the Bob Stocksdale International Award for Creativity from The Center for Art in Wood, a testament to his innovative approach and contribution to the field.

Pulver's artist statement sheds light on the philosophy behind his work: "I’m interested in making pieces that resonate and reflect. To resonate means to evoke or suggest images, memories, and emotions. To reflect means to bring about deep thought and contemplation. By using basic and elemental forms, I create an openness for viewers to form multi-referential relationships with the pieces. I strive to make pieces that are full of truth and meaning, celebrating the overlap of nature, science, and creativity." This philosophy manifests in each piece, revealing the intersection of simplicity and complexity in his work.

The exhibition "Close to Home: Landscape Portraits" invites viewers to experience the landscapes of Taos through Pulver's eyes. Each piece is meticulously carved to capture the intricate details of the terrain, transforming wood into a medium that speaks to the soul of the land. As Pulver journeys into these landscapes, he encounters forms that seem to possess their own personalities, emerging and chattering through the artist's attentive gaze.

"Close to Home: Landscape Portraits" is an invitation to join Dean Pulver on his journey, to see the world as he sees it, and to appreciate the profound beauty that lies within the natural contours of Taos. This collection of works promises to be a highlight of the summer art season, offering a unique blend of abstraction, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the land.
