Jorge Fick

Biography

Biography

Born George Fick in Detroit, Michigan in 1932, Fick changed his first name to Jorge to honor his South American heritage. He attended art workshops in Ajijic, Mexico and went on to graduate from Black Mountain College. Upon graduating, he moved to New York City to work with his mentor, the famed abstract expressionist painter Franz Kline.

In 1958 Fick made his way to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he shared a studio with John Chamberlain. He continued to paint, at one point serving as a color consultant to architect and designer Alexander Girard. Fick became known for his pop-influenced 'Pod' paintings, but explored a wide range of styles.

An integral figure in the Southwest art scene, Fick garnered critical acclaim for his innovative use of color and technical mastery. He spent the rest of his life in Northern New Mexico, living in both Santa Fe and Taos.
